A hurricane watch is in effect for Haiti and the Dominican Republic as Tropical Storm Melissa gains strength in the Caribbean.
Melissa currently has 50 mile-an-hour winds about 300 miles south of Haiti, where forecasters warn hurricane conditions including flash flooding and landslides are possible within 48 hours.
Forecasters say the five-day forecast shows Melissa may move northeast toward Jamaica, where a tropical storm watch is in effect.
The National Hurricane Center says Melissa is expected to strengthen as it moves north, and could become a hurricane by Thursday.
Melissa is not expected to threaten the Gulf Coast.
