Sam Asghari recently revealed the biggest obstacle he and former partner Britney Spears had to overcome during their seven-year relationship.
The actor appeared on the January 26 episode of iHeartRadio podcast Sibling Revelry and told hosts Kate and Oliver Hudson that one of the most difficult concepts for him to fathom during his union with the "Toxic" hitmaker was her conservatorship.
"One day I start learning about what the conservatorship is, and that’s when I was like, ‘Wait a minute. I thought I’m in America. What do you mean someone over the age of 18 needs permission from their parents?' That was the most difficult and weird spiral thing that I’ve witnessed in my life."
Spears was placed under a conservatorship (defined by California Courts as the appointment of a "person to act or make decisions for the person who needs help") in 2008, per Time Magazine, and was first romantically linked to Asghari in 2016. The pair dated for a few years before getting engaged in 2021, the same year the "Circus" icon's conservatorship was terminated. Spears and the Can You Keep A Secret? standout tied the knot in 2022 and were married for 14 months before Asghari filed for divorce in 2024, per Page Six.
Despite their differences, Asghari "gently" supported Spears through the endless legalities attached to terminating her conservatorship.
"I think the best thing to do is to provide support in that moment and that’s what I did, I provided as much as I could...Usually, the people that are around you, the people that you allow into your circle, you kind of are vulnerable to them. They take an advantage because they think, you know, you owe something to them or something, which is so ridiculous."
Though Spears and Asghari are no longer together, the actor told Kate and Oliver that he will always be grateful for their marriage.
"I’m always gonna be grateful and happy that it ever even happened."
