Police Identify Man Charged In Wake County Public Safety Center Shooting

Police have identified the man arrested in relation to a shooting at the Wake County Public Safety Center on Tuesday.

Willie Lee Hayes Jr., of Cary, was charged with attempted murder, kidnapping, discharge of a firearm into an occupied building and possession of a firearm by a felon, WRAL reports.

Hayes is accused of firing multiple shots into the Wake County Public Safety Center, which caused damages to windows and a door. Dozens of local authorities circled Hayes' Cary home and took him into custody without incident just after 4:00 p.m., WRAL reports.

A Wake County Sheriff's office spokesperson confirmed the arrest to ABC 11 at around 4:15 p.m. EST and said they believe the person was responsible for the shooting.

Local authorities are continuing to investigate the incident and the motive behind the shooting.

The Wake County Sheriff's Office confirmed its joint investigation into the incident on its Facebook account prior to announcing an arrest:

"The WCSO and Raleigh Police are searching for the person or persons responsible for firing several shots in our Public Safety Center. A manhunt is underway to search for the subject," the post stated.

ABC 11 confirmed a strong presence of Raleigh Police Department and Wake County Sheriff's Office vehicles were near the intersection of Davie Street and Salisbury investigating the scene Tuesday afternoon. A witness told ABC 11 that the suspect drove by the building and fired several shots.
