IBS Fodmap Diet is Wierd but it WORKS!?!

Have you heard of the Fodmap diet? It stands for (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides and Polyols.) The scientific names for sugars or carbohydrates in some foods that are poorly absorbed by our bodies.

The diet may surprise you as it kind of goes against other normally healthy diets. For instance red and white meat (including turkey), dark chocolate and maple syrup are allowed; but steer clear of apples, cauliflower or green peas. We can eat walnuts, but not pistachios. Eggplant is fine, but not asparagus. Garlic, onions, blackberries, mushrooms and sprouts, are also high in Fodmaps.

There is some good news though. If we avoid the Fodmap foods for a few weeks, the inflammation reduces and the gut relaxes. Then gradually one by one foods can be reintroduced. Consulting with your doctor is important to make sure you are not missing certain nutrients. To get a full list of Fodmap foods click here
