The Single Woman's Guide To Flirting ... On The ELEVATOR!

When you’re caught in an elevator with a good-looking guy, you might pretend like he’s not there because there are still six more stories of “I-don’t-know-if-I-have-time-to-start-a-conversation-and-I-don’t-want-to-run-into-you-in-the-future-and-be-the-weird-elevator-girl” awkwardness.

Luckily, there’s help to polish up your elevator flirt.  First of all, be prepared for the moment. This unexpected encounter will happen without notice.  When it does, you’ll have about a 20-second chance to spark brilliant conversation that might potentially lead to a coffee or maybe even lunch with him. IMPORTANT-Quickly scan the ring finger on the left hand first before you proceed.

You: (Casually) Excuse me, do you know what time it is?

Him:  Sure, it’s 7:30.

You: Thanks.  Glad I’m not running TOO late.  I’m _______, by the way.

Him: Hi, I’m __________________.  If he smiles back and mentions your name in that response, you’ve made an impression.

(Watch the body language and face—if things seem comfortable, proceed before the doors open.)

You: Nice to meet you [Repeat His Name Here].

Him: Nice to meet you too.

You: Maybe I’ll see you around campus sometime. (smile)

In the follow-up (if he know his last name), wait a couple of days, and see if you can find him on Facebook. If nothing shows up there, try Twitter. Then LinkedIn. If you find him, you can send him a private message that says: “Thanks again for giving me the time :) That’s it. Just a very few words will do it. (Too many may scare him off.) If he was interested, he’ll write back.  And if you DO find him on LinkedIn, send a contact request. Since this is more business driven, this will be a little less forward.  Then see where it goes.

HERE is variation of the encounter in the elevator at your office building.

You: (Casually) Excuse me, do you know what time it is?

Him:  Sure, it’s 7:30.

You: Thanks.  I don’t recognize you from the building. Are you new?

Him:  (Yes or no) I’m with (or visiting) __________________.

You: (Listen to that answer and the explanation and take interest right away.) Oh very cool. I’m Rachel, by the way.

Him: Hi Rachel.

You: I know that company, and some people up there. Do you have a business card? (If he is willing, he will gladly hand you one, OR tell you another way to reach him.)

You: Nice to meet you [Repeat His Name Here].

Him: Nice to meet you too.  (WATCH--If he smiles back and mentions your name, you’ve made an impression.

You: Maybe I’ll see you around here again sometime. (smile)
