WATCH-The Water Is POURING Out Of The Bonnet Carre Spillway

(NBC Local 33) Due to the rising Mississippi River, the Army Corps of Engineers opened the Bonnet Carre Spillway in St. Charles Parish yesterday. It the first time in history that the spillway opened in back-to-back years.

People from all over came out to watch the opening. Army Corps of Engineers Commander of the New Orleans District, Col. Michael Clancey, said it's a great learning opportunity. "Between the river, hurricanes and rainfall, we face multiple levels of flood risk. Understanding how that works, so you appreciate where you live and how you live is important.".

There are 30 out of 350 bays open now, with more to be added in the coming days.
