Top 11 items that should not be in your fridge

Top eleven items that should not be stored in the fridge:

  • Tomatoes only belong in the fridge once they've started to ripen and as a way to keep them fresh.
  • Bread -Putting it in the fridge will dry it out so if you are not going to eat it fast, then the better option is to freeze it and get slices out as you need them.
  • Potatoes the best way to store them, as well as onions, is in a cool dark place like the bottom of the pantry.
  • Coffee the condensation can affect its flavor. It is better to keep your beans or grinds fresh by storing them in an airtight jar or container.
  • Spreads-Check the label first for instructions but things that are high in salt like peanut butter are well-preserved so refrigeration isn't necessary. With things like jams, that have high sugar content means you don't have to store it in the fridge but it's wise to as they are prone to mold over time.
  • Fruit- Bananas do better when kept on the counter or pantry. Apples and oranges can also be stored like this, although once ripened they may last longer if kept in the fridge. However, soft fruit such as grapes, figs and berries are better when chilled.
  • Garlic should be stored in a cool, dark place which makes your pantry the ideal spot. But once it has been peeled it will need to be stored in the fridge.
  • Oils -Storing olive oil in the fridge gives it an exposure to light that can decrease its antioxidant activity. Dark pantry or cupboard is better.
  • Chocolate-Stored in the fridge it becomes dull and loses flavor.
  • Butter- high fat combined with a low water content makes it less friendly to bacterial growth. Butter is pasteurized, which repels bacteria and lengthens its shelf life, too. Of course we run on the hot side here during the summer so you may want to store it in the fridge seasonally.
  • Batteries- Don’t know where this myth got started but storing away from direct sunlight and actually warmer room temperature conditions is probably much better!
