Ditch the Diet Drinks and forget about the artificial sweeteners. Go back to sugar. Scientists found six sweeteners - all approved for use in foods and drinks in the US - were toxic to gut microbes. Artificial sweeteners have repeatedly been linked to obesity, cancer, type 2 diabetes, migraines and even liver toxicity. The artificial sweeteners are in everything from carbonated soft drinks, powdered soft drinks, chewing gum, dessert mixes, and even some vitamins and sugar-free cough drops.
Look out for aspartame, as well as sucralose, saccharine, neotame, advantame and/or acesulfame potassium-k.
