People who drink a cup of coffee first thing in the morning actually eat 10% less breakfast - but they make up for the calories later on. It has long been believed that coffee/caffeine suppresses appetite, or that it aids metabolism. However it only gives a short lived bump in the morning. That is more than caught up later in the day when less energy is available to burn through the extra calories. We are actually better off eating a large breakfast, medium sized lunch, and small dinner.
