Small Talk Doesn't Have to be Painful

Small talk seems like the simplest thing but if it is not your thing it can be brutal. But it doesn’t have to be if you keep a few tips in mind.

For starters put the ball in their court. Ask questions. Personally, I strive to challenge myself to come up with a different way to ask, “How are you?” It can be something as simple as being more specific with my questions, “How was your day?” Or, “Catch me up with what you’ve been doing since the last time I saw you.”

Another big thing to remember is you are not as boring as you think you are. Get that thought out of your head and you’ll do much better.

Find the extrovert in the room. They thrive on talking and your ability to chime in with encouragement occasionally is a perfect match!

Finally remember: It will be over before you know it. Stressing something that is relatively fleeting only serves to make it that much harder to handle. Breathe, make eye contact and smile.
