While a staple in nearly every meal we cook, onions, can take some of the joy out of cooking. However, with these simple tips the tears may not fall…
- Try putting onions in the fridge 30 minutes or in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before chopping them. The cold stops the eye irritating gas from being produced. However, do not store your onions in the fridge at all times as this will make them go bad quickly.
- Avoid the root. It is where the fumes are most concentrated. Chop from the other end first or chop the root off and quickly soak it in a bowl of water to keep the gas from escaping.
- As a “hot flash” sufferer this is my favorite option: Chop them with a fan on to blow the tear-jerk gas away from you.
