According to UN estimates, bugs are a feature in the diets of more than two billion people. More than 1,900 species of insects are considered edible. Of course, though we try to forget it, there are often bug parts accidently in the food we already eat…So is it that far of a stretch to have insects as the main ingredient? Switzerland has become the first European country to authorize the sale of insect-based food items for human consumption. The burger in the picture is an 'Essento Insect Burger,' made with flour worms, rice, carrots, celery and leeks, oregano and chili. The line, that starts being sold on August 21st, also offers “meatballs” containing meal-worms, and other items made from crickets and grasshoppers.
