They study over 4,000 adults and noticed while diet drinks were more likely to cause strokes and dementia, there was no link between sugary beverages and either of the illnesses - although the researchers contend they lead to a higher risk of obesity and diabetes.  The artificial sweeteners including aspartame and saccharine appear to be affecting blood vessels, that eventually triggers strokes and dementia. Adding insult to injury a major review by Imperial College London researchers found that the diet drinks were also no better at aiding weight loss than full fat drinks. In fact they suggested the substitutes were actually encouraging obesity by triggering the sugar receptors in the brain, making us crave even more sweet foods. Scientists say diet drinks should no longer be regarded as the healthier alternative and urge the public to stick to water or milk. Click here to read more
