The Louisiana Pediatric Cardiology Foundation (LPCF) assists families in south central Louisiana who have a child suffering with congenital heart defects or heart disease. Grants are issued to help cover the costs incurred from inpatient hospital stays (which can last up to months at a time) as well as medically necessary items that are not covered by third party payers, such as home oxygen and hefty prescription co-payments. Baton Rouge does not have a pediatric heart surgeon, so 100-150 children from our area are sent as far away as Boston each year for life-saving heart surgeries and interventions. LPCF helps primarily with travel and living expenses, allowing children to have the best possible outcome at a center of excellence. 1 in 100 are born with congenital heart defects, and more children die from congenital heart defects than ALL forms of childhood cancers combined.

In 2012, LPCF launched its "Save a Heart" program to provide free heart screens for high school athletes to identify those at risk for sudden cardiac death. To date, over 1,500 students in both public and private schools have been screened, with 8-9% requiring follow-up. For more information, go to www.lpcf.com.
